Certificate of Arts (Japanese language and history) at Massey University.
Motivation to begin Japanese language studies
Drawn to the Japanese people and culture after traveling there, Michael began his Japanese studies while completing his Bachelor of Agricultural Science.
Michael was impressed with the beauty of Japan and the kindness of the Japanese people. He says:
Japan is so different that every second is like being on a thrilling roller coaster – even to this day. The buzz of being able to communicate effectively grew larger as I got more responsibility so learning Japanese has become a life long journey for me.
Use of Japan/Japanese language skills and knowledge in current employment:
Michael runs a company called KOA Group (www.koagroup.co.nz) where he uses his language skills on a daily basis to communicate with staff and to work with Japanese investors. Michael has also authored a book to help with kanji learning: KanjiPro (www.kanjipro.com) and has exciting plans for its future.
Time spent in Japan and benefits gained
Michael spent three years on the JET programme and a further four and a half years as a private Coordinator for International Relations. He enjoys travelling to Japan every year for work and relaxation. Being able to speak Japanese has opened opportunities to connect with amazing people, communicate ideas on and off the stage – all in Japanese, and even to participate in fun events like Japanese chess competitions. Michael gratefully proclaims, “It is thanks to Japan that I am who I am”.
