Joe works as a a Specialist Registrarin in medicine.
Joe studied Japanese at Kelston Boys’High School and then went on to live in Fukuoka for a year as an exchange student. Study for a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Japanese at Otago University followed. Further study in sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery saw Joe move to Ireland where he is now practising as a Specialist Registrar.
Joe has presented medical research in English at the Japanese Orthopaedic Association annual conference twice, in 2010 and 2012. While these presentations were made in English, Joe still finds the Japanese language useful for social purposes and says his language study helps him be open to the way other people see the world which is particularly important when communicating with patients.
